> Adopt a Client: The Winner Is… <

3 06 2008

We are incredibly excited about our first attempt at “Adopting” a client. The response was strong, with 12 projects submitted, of which 10 were determined to be viable projects under the program guidelines. Each of the 10 projects was listed in a survey anonymously using “SurveyMonkey” and then circulated to a committee of anonymous blog visitors and interested friends for voting and selection.

Here’s the winning submission:

I’m a graphic designer/urban planner who, for the past two years, has been involved in a program where international interdisciplinary students come together to collaborate on community-based projects. I’ll be in Johannesburg for the month of July to work with a new nonprofit group. They are in one of the fastest growing and under-served areas in the City. To facilitate stronger local information networks the community would like to establish some kind of community newspaper. With limited resources, we’re looking at news chalkboards in Nigeria as a model for what could be (visit link here: http://www.candychang.com/2008/05/21/your-neighborhood-chalkboard/). Our backgrounds are mostly in architecture, design, and international planning, so it would be great to get your environmental and social expertise for an organization that needs all the help it can find in order to help empower its residents.

We have notified the organization of their selection and will post our “plan” once the teams have had the opportunity to sit down and discuss the appropriate way to proceed. From our understanding, the project submittor was recently called away to travel (in Japan and Taiwan), which may force us to shift the schedule out until her return (scheduled for mid-June).

Thank you to everyone who participated and voted. We look forward to sharing our findings with you as we move forward.
